Platelet Rich Plasma & Platelet Rich Fibrin
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) & Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) membranes are used to enhance healing of tissues after surgical procedures due to the growth factors that are contained within the membranes. The membranes are created by drawing a small amount of blood from the patient (10 to 30 cc) and spun in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spin will separate the plasma (serum) from the cells (red blood cells) leaving the platelets suspended in plasma. The layer between the plasma and red cells is called the buffy coat which contains the highest concentration of growth factors. When used correctly, the intraoral application of PRF & PRP releases the growth factors over a period of 7 to 10 days into the surgical site and stimulates stem cells to aid in tissue regeneration promoting the body to heal faster and more efficiently.
The application of PRF and PRP can be used in almost all facets of surgery: extractions, connective tissue grafts, implant procedures, sinus grafting, ridge augmentations, and bone grafting. Harvesting PRF and PRP is easy, it will be done the day of surgery and the plasma and buffy coat will be produced for immediate use during the surgical procedure. Ultimately the use of PRF and PRP provides positive long-term prognosis for the patient.
